Job description
Qualifications:
- Previous housekeeping experience, preferably in a retirement home.
- Ability to speak read and write English. Must be able to follow oral and written directions and to do simple arithmetic calculations.
- Ability to do extensive standing, walking, squatting, kneeling and moving of light objects.
- Maturity and good physical and mental health
- Ability to co-operate with others as members of care team
- Must be able to communicate in English (written, verbal, reading)
Responsibilities
- Maintain a clean, safe environment in the community.
- Work as a member of a team with all other community personnel.
- Be knowledgeable of and practice home’s fire and safety programs.
Job Duties
- Follow cleaning schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) as outlines for the department
- Clean and sanitize residents’ bathroom and all washrooms in the home, including all fixtures, tiles, floors, vanity and mirrors. Replenishes Bathroom supplies
- Must have the ability to handle cleaning product safety and properly clean assigned areas, furnishings, and fixtures according to established Housekeeping Procedures
- Empties, cleans and relines wastebaskets. Removes waste and disposes of waste in trash bins.
- Assists in terminal cleaning duties according to established procedures, Resident’s room when a Resident has been discharged or transferred and prepares room for new occupant.
- Water and care for plants in the home.
- Receives and puts away cleaning supplies delivered to the Residence. Clean and restock housekeeping cart.
- Report malfunctions in equipment and repairs needed to Maintenance Department through the Maintenance Book.
- Clean, dust and vacuum residents’ bedrooms and public areas of the home, i.e., lounges, corridors and elevators.
- Notify Building Support Coordinator, when housecleaning supplies are low.
- Removes curtains for cleaning and re-hang curtains, drapes, etc. when they are cleaned
- Is aware of Resident’s rights to privacy and endeavours to respect and promote it
- Attends in-services that are job-related in order to better serve the needs of the Residents and participates in Fire Drills
- Attends Staff meetings as required to know changes in the community
- Performs other related duties as requested by the manager
- Reports unusual Resident behaviour or illness to the RPN in charge or person most in charge.
Working Conditions
- Must be able to deal with exposure to dust during performance of duties and work safely with cleaning compounds
- Lifting alone, maximum 40 lbs. (5-25 lbs. usual) as a major job function. Lifting, with assistance, maximum 160 lbs. (100-120 lbs. usual ) as a major job function
- Pushing/pulling using wheeled equipment such as carts, trolleys, maximum 100 lbs. (20-50 Lbs. Usual) as a major job function
- Stretching/reaching on a regular frequency throughout the shift, as a minor job function.
- Walking with possibility some upstairs walking, up to 3 hrs. Maximum (1-2 hrs. Usual) as a major job function
- Standing for lengths of time, up to 3 hrs. Maximum (1-2 hrs. usual) as a major job function
- Bending/stooping on a regular frequency throughout the shift, as a major job function
- Crouching/kneeling for short periods of time as a minor job function
- Carries and transports objects of various sizes, to a maximum of 25 lbs. (5-15 lbs. Usual) as a major job function
Other considerations
- You must pass a Vulnerable sector back ground check.
- You must be able to work with Dogs and Cats and other animals, allergies or other needs cannot be accommodated.
- Due to our high level of residents with dementia; your tattoos and piercings must either remained covered by clothing or are discrete. Any other external body decoration, including hair, must not be frightening to a frail senior with dementia.
- You must be legally allowed to work in Canada.
- You must be in good physical health as this job requires lifting, sitting, standing and walking.
- Must be able to read and write in English to a minimum High School Level.
- Available on call and in emergency situations.
